A spreadsheet is taller than it is wide, and almost every monitor on the shelf is sold the other way round. That single mismatch is the whole reason a new screen can feel like a completely different machine to work on โ or like no upgrade at all. The decision is not about brands, colour accuracy or refresh rate. It is about how many rows and columns of cells you can see without touching the scroll bar, and that number can be worked out in advance for any monitor, with arithmetic you can do in a minute.
One thing worth settling before you spend anything: a monitor changes what you can see, never how fast the file computes. Why spreadsheets are a different monitor problem than films or games
Monitor reviews are written for people watching video, playing games or editing photographs. Every specification that gets repeated โ contrast ratio, response time, refresh rate, colour gamut coverage โ is chosen for a moving image with photographic detail. A grid of black text on white is almost the opposite workload.
What a spreadsheet asks of a screen is much narrower. It needs the text to be crisp at small sizes, because the default cell font is genuinely small. It needs the whole panel to stay evenly lit, because a long session means staring at one bright uniform surface. It needs the screen to hold still, because nothing on it moves. And it needs to be tall, because in a table the direction of travel is usually down: more records, more rows, one after another.
The remaining thing it needs is the physical ability to sit somewhere the sheet fits, which is where stands, arms and ports come in, and where most buying guides stop. Those matter more here than panel technology does, and they are the parts you can actually verify from a specification sheet before you buy.
The arithmetic that decides everything
Excel defaults give you two numbers worth memorising, because everything below is built from them. The default row height is 15 points, which is about 20 pixels at 100 percent zoom. The default column width is 8.43 characters, which is about 64 pixels at 100 percent zoom. A sheet is therefore a grid of roughly 20 by 64 pixel bricks, and your screen is a window onto that grid.
So the calculation is trivial. Take the usable height of the sheet area โ that is the panel height minus the ribbon, the formula bar, the status bar and the operating system taskbar, which together eat roughly 250 to 300 pixels โ and divide by 20. Take the usable width and divide by 64. Those two quotients are the number of rows and columns you can see at 100 percent zoom, on default formatting, with the window maximised.

Read that table again with one thing in mind: the far right column is what you are actually buying. Everything else on a specification sheet is a means to those numbers, and those numbers are what you feel every hour of a working day.
Portrait is the biggest single win, and it is a stand feature
Rotating a 27 inch 1440p panel so its long edge is vertical is the highest-value move available to a spreadsheet user, and it costs nothing extra if the stand allows it. The pixel count does not change, so the gain is pure reallocation: all the height that was going into width in landscape now goes into rows. You go from about 55 rows on screen to about 115, and the trade is that you drop from about 40 columns to about 22.
Whether that trade is good depends entirely on the shape of your own work, and it is worth measuring rather than guessing. Open the sheet you spend the most time in, note the column letter at the right edge of the window and the row number at the bottom, and then scroll down through the whole file. If you cover a dozen screen-heights of rows and never scroll right past column Z, portrait will feel like a different application. If your work is a reconciliation across twenty-five columns with only a few hundred rows, portrait will feel cramped the first day.
The trap is that pivot is a stand feature, not a panel feature, and it is often described in the least specific words on the page: rotation, pivot, portrait mode, or the phrase adjustable stand. A stand that only tilts up and down and swivels left and right will not rotate, and it is easy to buy a good panel with a stand that cannot do the one thing you came for. Check for an explicit 90 degree rotation figure, and if the wording is vague, assume it cannot.

Ultrawide adds columns, never rows
The most common misunderstanding about ultrawide screens is that they are simply bigger. They are wider, and in the vertical direction they are usually identical to the mainstream screen you already know: a 34 inch 3440 by 1440 ultrawide has exactly the same 1440 rows of pixels as a 27 inch 2560 by 1440, which means exactly the same number of spreadsheet rows visible. What it adds is roughly 880 pixels of width, which is about fourteen more columns of default width.
That is a real gain, just not the gain most people assume. An ultrawide is the right screen for comparing columns that are far apart, for keeping a lookup table and a working table visible at the same time, or for splitting the panel into two windows in Windows or macOS snapping. It is the wrong screen if your complaint is that you keep scrolling down.
Curvature belongs to the same size discussion. The ends of a panel stop being the same distance from your eyes as the middle somewhere around 30 inches of width, which is why curves appear at 34 inches and above and are pointless on a 24 or 27 inch screen. For a spreadsheet specifically, the benefit of the curve is that rows at the left and right edges keep the same apparent height, rather than seeming to drift away and shrink. Resolution and scaling: what 4K does and does not do for a table
Resolution is the specification most likely to be misread at the moment of purchase, because the honest answer is that it changes sharpness far more than it changes quantity. At 100 percent scaling a 4K panel holds an enormous sheet area, but the default cell font becomes small enough that most people give up on it within a day. So they switch to 150 percent scaling, and the effective desktop becomes 2560 by 1440 โ the same sheet area as a 1440p screen, rendered with noticeably crisper text.
That is still a worthwhile upgrade. Small text rendered cleanly is measurably easier to read for hours than small text rendered softly, and a spreadsheet is one of the few places where you spend an entire working day reading 11 point glyphs. Just do not buy 4K believing it doubles your rows, because at a comfortable scaling setting it does not, and the arithmetic in the table above is what you end up living with.

Panel details that matter over a long session
Three panel properties are worth the two minutes it takes to check, and they all relate to the fact that a spreadsheet session is long, static and bright.
The first is panel type. - A high refresh rate gaming panel, for spreadsheet reasons. No grid of cells renders fast enough for 144Hz to be perceptible. If the same panel happens to be the cheapest route to IPS, 1440p and pivot, buy it for those reasons and ignore the rest.
